Business Intelligence Tools reveal more in our data
Business Intelligence tools are revealing more insights in our data, helping us to learn more about what help people are asking for to resolve their legal problems. Read on to see what we are learning!
Here is what is going on:
1. TABLEAU – What, Why and PLAY
What: Tableau is a Business Intelligence (BI) tool that puts all our data in an easy-to-use visualization. Modern BI tools such as Tableau and Power BI emphasize self-service analysis and empowered users
Why: Modern BI is, in a word: powerful. Tableau lets us interact with our data. It lets us explore trends and peaks in Reddit posting activity. It generates insights about how people engage on Reddit. The JDD Team continues to use LDA Clusters to review our data, but this new tool gives a fresh look at what is going on.
Fun Fact: The JDD Lab tested both POWER BI and TABLEAU. Both deliver easy-to-use analysis, but we would have had to upgrade our website to share the Power BI results while Tableau works with what we have.

2. Business Intelligence Tools – Why This Matters
Tableau helps us take a data-driven approach to uncover regional and temporal patterns in legal queries, guiding better resource allocation to meet public needs.
Key Insight:
From January to September 2024, the number of posts collected has already surpassed the total posts from all of 2023. This growth underscores Reddit’s evolving role as a hub for discussing legal issues and seeking community advice.
This is more evidence that the JDD Lab’s RBot is a person-centred, evidence-based innovation that is really helping people.
Watch for RBot Version 4 – release date early December!
More insights:
- Regional Trends:
- Ontario leads in legal issue-related posts, followed by British Columbia and Alberta.
- Provinces with fewer posts present opportunities for targeted outreach and support.
- Peaks in Activity:
- Peaks in February and April 2024 highlight potential seasonality in user activity.
- Engagement:
- High engagement levels in Ontario and British Columbia with greater counts of comments and scores, showcasing active community discussions.
Remember the Goal: At the Justice Data and Design Lab, interdisciplinary teams of graduate students – currently from Law and Data Science – use AI and data analytics to collect and analyze data and learn what legal problems British Columbias have, and what help they are asking for to resolve them. Then we build prototypes that provide that help. Thank you for joining us on this journey!
We are grateful for the support of the Law Foundation of BC and Mitacs. We could not do this work without them.
